Traditional Industries:  Pulp and Paper

MEMORANDUM

To: Selected University, Industry, and State Agency Leaders

From: Art Ford, TIP3 Program Manager

Date: October 2, 2006

Subject: FY2008 Request for Research Proposals for the Traditional Industries Program for Pulp and Paper

The Traditional Industries for Pulp and Paper (TIP3) invites University System of Georgia researchers to submit research and technology transfer proposals to be considered for funding in fiscal year 2008 (July 1, 2007 -- June 30, 2008). State funds appropriated to TIP3 projects selected by industry and conducted by faculty from the University System of Georgia. TIP3 encourages participation from all interested researchers and requires industrial partnership on all projects.

A Letter of Intent to submit a proposal is due Friday December 22, 2006.

A new requirement added to the proposal process this year is a letter of intent to submit a proposal. A proposal will not be accepted in February unless a Letter of Intent (form is included in attached RFP) has been submitted by the December 22, 2006 deadline. The Letter of Intent (submitted electronically) should include:
" A working title for the proposal
" Principal researcher
" Brief descriptive paragraph of proposed research
" Brief descriptive paragraph on the potentials benefits of the research to industry
" Industry sponsor company, location and company contact

The purpose of the Letter of Intent is to assure industry partners are identified early in the process and are able to contribute to and review the proposal. Also, it provides advance notice to the committees which research areas are of interest, and, if duplicate proposals are planned, allows the opportunity for collaboration.

All proposal submissions are due on Monday, February 5, 2007 and must be submitted electronically to Art Ford (art.ford@innovate.gatech.edu).

Proposals will be reviewed and prioritized by TIP3 industry-led technical committees in March 2007. TIP3's Coordinating Committee will make the final selection of the FY08 research agenda in May 2007. Traditional Industries Program funding comes from state appropriations, so we will not know the exact level of funding until mid-March 2007.

The attached package provides details about the Traditional Industries Program and the FY2008 proposal submission guidelines. If you have any questions, please contact Art Ford at 229-430-6195, or at art.ford@innovate.gatech.edu.

We are looking forward to working with you to make Georgia's pulp and paper industries a significant competitor in the global marketplace.
