Georgia's Pulp and Paper Industry

Georgia is home to 27 pulp and/or paper mills that produce more paper and paperboard than any state except Alabama. Several corporate and divisional headquarters of pulp and paper companies are located in Georgia, signifying the importance of Georgia's central geographical location. Georgia's pulp and paper mills ship $10 billion in pulp and paperboard products worldwide, employ 26,000 Georgians, and have an annual payroll of $1.2 billion.

With 24 million acres of commercial forests, Georgia leads the nation in total commercial forest acreage. Timber is also Georgia's highest valued agricultural product, creating over 177,000 jobs statewide and having an approximate $19.5 billion annual economic impact. Increasing market demand for paper and paper products emphasizes the importance of strategic forest management to help Georgia companies increase output while preserving the state's forest acreage.
