Traditional Industries:  Textiles and Carpet

MEMORANDUM

To: Selected University, Industry, and State Agency Leaders

From: David Apple, CCACTI Program Manager

Date: October 2, 2006

Subject: FY2008 Call for Research Proposals for the Traditional Industries Program

The Consortium on Competitiveness for the Apparel, Carpet, and Textile Industries (CCACTI) invites you to submit research and technology transfer proposals to be considered for funding in fiscal year 2008 (July 1, 2007 -- June 30, 2008). State funds appropriated to CCACTI support projects selected by industry and conducted by faculty from the University System of Georgia. CCACTI encourages participation from all interested parties, and requires industrial partnership on all projects.

A Letter of Intent to submit a proposal is due Friday December 22, 2006.

A new requirement added to the proposal process this year is a letter of intent to submit a proposal. The format is attached. A proposal will not be accepted in February unless a Letter of Intent has been submitted by the December 22, 2006 deadline. The Letter of Intent should include:
" A working title for the proposal
" Principal researcher
" Brief descriptive paragraph of proposed research
" Brief descriptive paragraph on the potentials benefits of the research to industry
" Industry sponsor company, location and company contact

The purpose of the Letter of Intent is to assure industry partners are identified early in the process and able to contribute to and review the proposal, to provide advance notice to the committees which research areas are of interest, and, if duplicate proposals are planned, allow the opportunity for collaboration.

All proposal submissions are due on Monday, February 5, 2007.

Proposals are reviewed and prioritized by CCACTI's industry-led technical committees. GTMA's Research Advisory Committee, CCACTI's industry governing body, will make final selection of the FY2008 research agenda.

The Traditional Industries Program funding comes from state appropriations, so the exact level of our funding is not known until mid-March 2007. In the past years, the state has invested over $4 million annually in the Traditional Industries Program of which CCACTI receives about $1.2 million.

The attached package provides details about the Traditional Industries Program, the proposal submission guidelines, and the research priorities for FY2008. If you have questions, please contact David Apple, CCACTI Program Manager, at 770-387-4002 or at david.apple@innovate.gatech.edu.

We look forward to working with you as we continue to make Georgia's apparel, carpet, and textile industries a significant competitor in the global marketplace.
